Avoiding Being Targeted While Parked Alone in a Vehicle

Robbery In Your Car High risk
How to protect yourself

A parked vehicle with a single occupant who remains stationary for an extended period is a low-risk, high-reward target — criminals can observe the occupant, assess the threat, and approach with multiple armed attackers before the driver has time to react or escape. In two documented incidents, a victim waiting alone outside a school in daylight was approached at gunpoint and transported to an isolated location, and a man parked alone at night was overwhelmed by a group of armed attackers before he could drive away. In both cases, prolonged stationary occupation of a vehicle — alone, without a clear exit plan — created the window criminals needed. The best protection is to minimise the time you spend as a visible, stationary lone occupant in a vehicle.

Steps to follow:

  • If you must wait in a vehicle, position it with the front facing an exit so you can drive away without reversing or manoeuvring.
  • Keep all doors locked and windows up while stationary — an unlocked door removes a critical barrier between you and anyone who approaches.
  • If waiting for someone, communicate via phone and wait inside a building or busy public area rather than sitting alone in the car.
  • Be alert to vehicles or individuals that slow down, make U-turns near you, or appear to be observing your car — if you notice this, drive away immediately without waiting to confirm your concern.
  • Avoid remaining in a parked vehicle at night unless you are in a well-lit, high-traffic location with other people nearby.
  • If approached at gunpoint while stationary, comply with demands and hand over valuables without resistance.
