Staying Safe When Travelling Through Remote Areas
Criminals who operate in remote or rural areas rely on isolation — there are fewer witnesses, slower emergency response times, and limited escape options for victims. In documented incidents, attackers have used vehicles with deliberately obscured registration plates and tinted windows to approach victims in low-traffic areas during daylight hours, precisely because the appearance of daytime safety masks the real vulnerability of the location. Anyone moving through a remote area while carrying cash, business proceeds, or valuable equipment is a potential target, and the time between being identified and being approached can be very short. Avoiding isolation — in your route, your timing, and your companions — is the primary defence when moving through unfamiliar or low-traffic areas.
Steps to follow:
- Avoid travelling through remote or rural areas alone, especially when carrying cash, equipment, or anything of visible value.
- Travel in convoy with at least one other vehicle when the route requires passing through isolated stretches.
- Note the registration of any vehicle that appears to follow you or slows unusually near you — a vehicle with obscured, covered, or unreadable plates is a serious warning sign.
- Do not stop in isolated areas for unknown vehicles that signal or flash you to pull over — continue at a steady pace to the nearest populated area or petrol station before stopping.
- Inform a trusted contact of your route and expected arrival time before travelling through remote areas, and check in at intervals.
- If approached and unable to drive away, comply with demands and prioritise your safety over any property.
