Never Exit Your Home Based on an Unverified Claim
Criminals have used a straightforward social manipulation to draw victims out of their homes: someone approaches the property and claims to know the occupant, or delivers an urgent message designed to prompt the victim to step outside. Once the victim crosses the threshold of their gate or compound, accomplices waiting in a nearby vehicle carry out the attack. The safety that a secured home provides is immediately forfeited the moment you exit in response to an unverified claim. Unlike a knock from a stranger — which most people treat with some caution — a claim of familiarity exploits the social instinct to be open with people who appear connected to your life, and the urgency of a fabricated message suppresses the instinct to slow down and verify.
Steps to follow:
- Never step outside your gate or compound in response to an unknown individual claiming to know you — ask them to identify themselves specifically through the closed gate and verify the claim with the person they reference before opening anything.
- If the caller cannot provide verifiable details — full name, how you know each other, the contact of the person they claim to represent — treat the interaction as suspicious.
- Before opening your gate, look toward the street: if a vehicle is parked nearby with occupants who remain inside and do not exit, do not go outside.
- Respond to urgent claims about accidents or emergencies involving family by calling the relevant person directly before acting on what the visitor tells you at your gate.
- If you feel pressured to leave quickly and cannot verify the claim, call a neighbour or family member and ask them to be present before you exit.
- Report any suspicious approach of this nature to the police, even if no physical incident occurred — this pattern often precedes a more serious attempt.
