Concealing Valuables Before Exiting Your Vehicle
The moment you exit your vehicle is one of the shortest but most vulnerable transitions in your daily routine. Criminals who target visible jewellery — particularly gold chains — operate by identifying a target while the vehicle is still in motion or parked, then closing the distance quickly from behind as the victim is occupied with locking the car, gathering bags, or walking away. A daylight setting does not reduce this risk; it can make valuable jewellery easier to identify from a distance. The approach from behind is deliberate, as it removes the victim’s awareness of the threat until physical contact has already been made. Your best defence begins before the car door opens.
Steps to follow:
- Remove or conceal chains, bracelets, and other visible jewellery before reaching your destination — tuck chains inside your collar while still inside the vehicle.
- Before opening your car door, use your mirrors to check for individuals on foot nearby who appear to be watching you or moving in your direction.
- Step out facing outward toward the street rather than turning your back to it — this keeps potential threats in your line of sight.
- Move away from the vehicle quickly and with purpose; extended time spent at the car door — searching for keys, adjusting bags — increases your exposure window.
- If you notice someone loitering close to your parking spot before you exit, remain inside with the doors locked until they have moved on or another person is clearly visible nearby.
- Report any jewellery snatch — including failed attempts — to 999 promptly; location-specific patterns are only tracked when incidents are reported.
