Overnight break-ins at business compounds typically exploit one of two conditions: a physical gap that bypasses the need for forced entry, or a security presence that is reactive rather than proactive. A 2026 break-in at an agricultural compound in Couva illustrates both — burglars entered through a hole in a wall and an open window, while a watchman on site was alerted to unusual sounds only after the breach was already underway. CCTV footage revealed five individuals moving across the compound, indicating coordinated pre-planning. Physical gaps that appear minor — a wall in poor repair, a window left unsecured — function as invitation points for criminals who have already scouted the location. Closing them removes the low-effort entry route entirely.

Steps to follow:

  • Make a physical check of all windows, doors, and perimeter walls part of your close-of-business routine — an unsecured window or an unrepaired breach in a wall is an access point that requires no tools to exploit.
  • Repair any structural damage to compound walls or fencing promptly; criminals who scout premises will note these as viable entry routes and return.
  • Brief your watchman or security guard to conduct active, timed patrols rather than remaining stationary — a patrol that checks perimeter walls and secondary access points on a schedule is significantly harder to circumvent than a guard waiting for sounds.
  • Review CCTV camera placement to ensure all perimeter entry points, including walls and secondary gates, are covered; criminals who scout your compound will identify and use any blind spots.
  • Consider motion-activated lighting at compound perimeters — darkness allows individuals to cross open ground and test entry points without being seen from a guard post or nearby properties.
  • Establish a clear protocol: when suspicious sounds or activity are detected overnight, police are called first, not investigated alone.
