Reporting Suspicious Individuals in Your Residential Building

Shooting At Home High risk
How to protect yourself

Two masked men dressed in dark clothing entered a residential building in Maloney during the afternoon and discharged multiple rounds before fleeing on foot. Spent shells and projectiles were recovered from both inside and outside the building; no residents were injured. The attack occurred in shared interior spaces of the compound — not targeting a specific unit — which means every resident in the building was exposed to ballistic risk from a threat that had already gained entry before anyone responded. Residential buildings and apartment compounds in T&T frequently have limited ground-level access control, making the moments when suspects are approaching or crossing into the compound the only realistic window for early intervention. Masked individuals in dark clothing have no legitimate reason to enter a residential building, and acting on that observation immediately — rather than waiting to see what they will do — is the only action that can change the outcome.

Steps to follow:

  • If you observe a masked or heavily concealed individual entering your building compound, do not approach or challenge them directly — remove yourself from the area immediately and call 999.
  • Know the appearance and vehicles of your immediate neighbours so that you can identify people who do not belong in your compound without needing to approach them.
  • If you hear gunfire inside or near your building, stay low, move away from windows and exterior walls, and do not leave the building until police have confirmed the area is clear.
  • Advocate with your building management or landlord for controlled access at the compound entrance — a lockable gate, intercom system, or visible CCTV camera at the entry point raises the cost of entry for anyone intending to cause harm.
  • Do not allow an unfamiliar person to follow you through a gate or door that requires a key or code to open; hold it only for residents you personally know.
  • After any incident involving unknown individuals entering your building, provide police with a detailed description including clothing colour, build, estimated height, and the direction of travel — this information assists investigations even when suspects are not caught at the scene.
