Avoiding Armed Robbery at Late-Night ATMs

ATM Crime At the ATM High risk
How to protect yourself

Armed robberies at ATMs late at night follow a predictable pattern: two or more criminals enter the booth together, one controls the victim at gunpoint while an accomplice takes valuables. The confined space of an ATM kiosk removes your ability to flee, puts you in close physical proximity to the threat, and isolates you from passersby — a combination that makes resistance futile and compliance the only realistic response. A 2026 incident on Eastern Main Road, San Juan illustrated this exactly: around 12:30 AM, a police officer was targeted inside an ATM by two men, one armed, who took three gold chains and an iPhone 14 before fleeing. The threat is not simply the machine — it is the location, the time, and the presence of others who entered with you or behind you.

Steps to follow:

  • Avoid using ATMs after dark wherever possible; if you must withdraw cash at night, use a machine inside a 24-hour business, petrol station, or heavily monitored lobby rather than a standalone kiosk.
  • Before entering an ATM booth, look through the door or window — if anyone is already inside or loitering immediately outside, do not enter; wait or choose another machine entirely.
  • If a person enters the booth while you are transacting, end the session immediately (cancel, retrieve your card) and exit without completing the withdrawal; you can return when the booth is clear.
  • Never stand in an ATM booth longer than necessary — complete your transaction quickly, pocket your card and cash together, and leave before counting or organising your money.
  • If you are confronted by an armed person inside an ATM, comply without resistance; do not fight, reach for your phone, or attempt to identify the attackers until you are safely away from the scene.
  • Report the incident to the nearest police station as soon as you reach a safe location and preserve any details you observed — number of attackers, direction of flight, vehicle description if applicable.
