Securing Your Belongings When Leaving Your Seat at a Bar
In April 2026, a man in Chaguanas had TT$4,100 stolen from his bag at a bar while he was in the washroom. CCTV captured the suspect — a person he knew — reaching into the unattended bag, removing the money, and closing the bag before the victim returned. The incident illustrates that opportunistic theft in social environments does not require a stranger. A trusted companion who observes that cash is present and that the owner will be absent for a predictable window will sometimes act on that information. An unattended bag at a bar is a controllable vulnerability regardless of who is nearby when you leave your seat, and no amount of CCTV coverage prevents the theft from occurring — it only creates evidence after the fact.
Steps to follow:
- Never leave a bag containing cash, phones, or documents unattended at a bar — take it with you when going to the washroom, even if others remain at the table.
- If you cannot take your bag, remove your wallet, phone, and any cash from it before leaving your seat and carry those items on your person.
- Do not count, display, or sort cash in front of others at a bar; once people at your table know the amount you are carrying, that information is available whether you leave or not.
- Trust does not guarantee security — documented incidents show that acquaintances and friends, not only strangers, commit opportunistic theft when cash is visible and the owner is absent.
- If you discover money missing from your bag after returning to your seat, do not confront the person you suspect directly — leave the venue and report to police immediately; CCTV footage is most easily recovered within the first 24 to 48 hours.
- When reporting to police, ask that they contact the bar owner to preserve CCTV footage before it is overwritten — this is a time-sensitive step that can determine whether the evidence is usable.
