Avoiding Outdoor Exposure at Your Property at Night
Spending time in the outdoor areas of your property alone after dark — in a hammock, on a porch, or in an open yard — removes every protective layer that your home’s structure provides. In an April 2026 incident in Brasso, a man lying in a hammock at midnight was approached from behind by two men known to him, who covered his eyes to disorient him, beat him, and forced him into his bedroom before robbing him of cash and a phone. An attacker who approaches your outdoor resting position undetected has bypassed every door, lock, and grille on your property without needing to force a single entry point. The victim had no warning and no barrier — the only thing standing between him and the attack was the open yard. Familiarity with the attackers did not protect him: individuals known to you can still represent a threat, and a late-night presence in your yard from a known contact at an unusual hour should be treated with the same alertness as a stranger.
Steps to follow:
- Avoid spending time in outdoor areas of your property — hammocks, patio chairs, open galleries, and yards — alone and unobserved after dark; if you use these spaces at night, ensure you have clear sightlines in all directions and cannot be approached from behind without warning.
- Secure perimeter gates, fence access points, and yard entries before spending time outdoors in the evening; a locked perimeter forces any intruder into visible, audible action before they can reach you.
- Do not assume familiarity reduces risk — apply the same alertness to unannounced late-night arrivals from known contacts as you would to a stranger; an unexpected presence in your yard at midnight, regardless of who it is, warrants immediate caution.
- Install motion-activated perimeter lighting that covers your yard and approach paths; an attacker who steps into a flooded light loses the element of surprise that makes a behind-approach possible.
- If your outdoor routine — time, location, and habit — is observable and consistent, vary it; a predictable pattern at a specific hour in a specific spot creates a reliable window for a planned approach.
- If you are attacked in an outdoor area of your home, prioritise moving toward a neighbour, a road, or a locked interior space over attempting to resist in an open yard where attackers have full freedom of movement.
