Never Rest Alone at an Isolated Outdoor Work Facility
Outdoor work facilities — fishing ports, farm sheds, construction yards — create a specific vulnerability during the early morning hours before other workers arrive. A person who rests or sleeps at such a location is physically exposed, often in an unguarded position, and cannot monitor who is approaching. In Guayaguayare on June 18, 2026, a fisherman relaxing alone in a hammock at approximately 5:30 a.m. was attacked without warning by a man known to him. The assailant approached armed with a cutlass and launched a sudden attack before the victim had any opportunity to respond. The victim’s injuries — severe cuts to his right hand requiring surgery — resulted not from a failure to recognise the danger in time, but from being in a position where no reaction was possible. Resting at an isolated facility where a grievance is known or suspected does not reduce the risk; it concentrates it.
Steps to follow:
- Do not sleep or rest in a hammock, chair, or similar exposed position at a public-facing outdoor work facility; if you need to rest before your shift begins, do so inside a secured structure with a closed and lockable entrance.
- If you are the only person at a work facility in the early morning hours, keep a phone in your hand or pocket rather than set aside; the ability to call for help is eliminated the moment an attacker has closed distance.
- If a known individual with whom there is any history of friction or dispute approaches you when you are alone at a work location, stand, position yourself with your back toward a wall or structure, and do not allow them to move around your blind side.
- Inform a family member or trusted colleague of your work schedule, including when you are at a facility alone before regular hours; if you do not check in at an agreed time, they should call or attend.
- Report any prior threats or confrontations with a known individual to police before an incident occurs; documented reports establish a record that protects you and may prompt early intervention.
- If attacked, flee toward any area where other people are likely to be present rather than toward isolated or enclosed spaces; distance from the attacker is the priority.
