Seeking Cover During a Workplace Compound Attack
Workplaces connected to high-profile disputes — criminal, financial, or otherwise — can become targets for coordinated gunfire during business hours, with no warning before the attack begins. In a June 2026 incident along Mausica South Road, two gunmen exited a white Nissan Tiida and opened fire on a gravel pit operation, discharging multiple rounds at an office building and a vehicle on the compound. An employee operating a heavy loader approximately 200 feet from the roadway responded by raising the loader bucket as a shield and reversing behind a stockpile to place solid material between himself and the line of fire. The attackers fired, returned to their vehicle, and fled within seconds. The employee was uninjured. The critical factor was his immediate use of available cover — he did not freeze, attempt to flee across open ground, or remain exposed in the cab while the shooting continued.
Steps to follow:
- If gunfire erupts on your work compound, immediately identify the nearest solid cover — a concrete wall, heavy machinery, a stockpile, or the corner of a building — and move to it without crossing open ground toward the threat.
- Stay low and keep as much solid material as possible between your body and the direction of fire; do not rely on vehicle doors, glass, or lightweight structures as cover.
- Do not stand up, move through open areas, or attempt to reach an exit that puts you in the line of fire — remain in cover and wait until you are certain the attack has ended and the attackers have left the compound.
- If you operate heavy equipment, use it immediately: raise a bucket or blade as a barrier, and reverse away from the direction of fire using the machine’s body for shielding.
- Once the threat has withdrawn, call 999 and do not disturb shell casings, projectiles, or tyre marks before police arrive — the scene is evidence.
- If your workplace has a history of threats or is associated with a known dispute, raise this with management and discuss an emergency response protocol in advance; knowing where to go before an incident occurs dramatically improves your reaction time.
