Completing In-Person Sales Without Entering Their Vehicle

RobberyIn Your CarMedium risk
How to protect yourself

Getting into another person’s vehicle to complete a sale hands over control of the exchange the moment the door closes. A 22-year-old man selling a gold bracelet near the NEC Centre on Carlsen Field Road in July 2026 was lured into a gold Nissan Tiida by a man he knew, under the pretense of completing the transaction — once inside, the front-seat passenger produced what appeared to be a firearm and the victim was robbed and ordered out of the vehicle. A public roadside meeting had already been arranged, but the decision to step from open ground into an enclosed vehicle removed every advantage that public visibility had provided. Once inside a car, there are no bystanders, no easy exit, and no way to disengage without the other party’s cooperation.

Steps to follow:

  • Complete any in-person sale of valuables standing outside a vehicle, in an open and visible area — never step inside a buyer’s or seller’s car to finish a transaction, even if you know the person.
  • If the other party insists the item or payment must be handled inside their vehicle, treat that insistence itself as a warning sign and end the meeting.
  • Arrange high-value, in-person sales at a designated safe-exchange location, such as a police station forecourt or a well-lit, camera-covered public area, rather than a roadside or car park.
  • Bring a second person with you to any in-person sale involving cash or valuables of significant worth, and have them remain visible outside the vehicle at all times.
  • Photograph or note the registration plate of any vehicle involved in the transaction before approaching, and share it with a contact along with your meeting location.
  • If a weapon is produced or a robbery is announced inside a vehicle, comply immediately and hand over the item — resisting inside an enclosed space with an armed occupant sharply increases the risk of injury.
