Woman loses $9,000 in online vehicle scam

Facebook Marketplace, Online

A woman reported losing $9,000 in a suspected online vehicle scam on Tuesday, February 10, 2026. She had entered into a 'work-to-own' arrangement with a man identifying himself as George Kennedy, who advertised a silver Toyota Corolla (registration PCS 6527) for $69,000 on Facebook Marketplace. The victim transferred a $9,000 down payment on Monday, February 9, 2026, to a Republic Bank account in the name of Jonathon Ramoutar, with the understanding she would receive a receipt, signed contract, and vehicle possession the following day. When she attempted to contact the seller on Tuesday to finalize the transaction, all efforts to reach him were unsuccessful. Police are investigating the incident as a suspected online fraud scheme.
