AroucaRemand Prisoner Christopher Banfield (48) Beaten to Death by Inmate

Maximum Security Prison, Arouca, Tunapuna - Piarco

Christopher Banfield, 48, a remand prisoner at the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca, was found dead in his cell on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, following an alleged overnight assault by another inmate. Banfield's body was discovered around 5:30 a.m. during routine cell checks; he was lying motionless on the floor of a cell he shared with three other inmates, curled in a fetal position. Investigators reported significant injuries including facial swelling and blood from his mouth, with fellow prisoners stating that the suspect had repeatedly assaulted Banfield, dealing blows to his head, face and body over an extended period before he collapsed and became unresponsive. Police launched a homicide investigation; the District Medical Officer pronounced Banfield dead and ordered a post-mortem examination at the Forensic Science Centre to determine the exact cause of death. Crime Scene Investigators and homicide detectives processed the scene and collected evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
