Two security officers on duty at the Courland Beach Sports Arena were ambushed shortly before midnight on Wednesday by two masked men, one armed with a firearm, in an attempt to steal a white Mitsubishi truck and yellow Caterpillar backhoe. The gunmen forced the guards to lie face down on the ground, tied their hands and feet, and threatened them by claiming an accomplice was watching from the fence line. The suspects stole the keys to both vehicles and $200 from one guard's wallet before driving away in the truck and backhoe. The stolen Mitsubishi truck was valued at $412,000 and the Caterpillar backhoe at $850,000, totalling $1.262 million in equipment stolen. Police have identified two suspects and investigations are continuing into the armed robbery.
