A family at Les Jardines townhouses on Rapsey Street, Curepe was robbed of jewellery and cash during a daylight home invasion on Monday. One woman awoke to hear the backdoor creaking open as bandits entered the residence and forced family members—including her 72-year-old mother, sister-in-law, and nine-year-old nephew—into the living room at gunpoint. The robbers took valuables intended for bill payments before leaving the same way they arrived. Neighbours heard the commotion and called police, who arrived within minutes and arrested one suspect at the scene. Officers searched an abandoned gym on nearby land where they confronted suspect Shakeem Gabriel, alias 'Kunta', who opened fire on officers; police returned fire, fatally striking him. Gabriel was pronounced dead at Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex. Both Gabriel and the arrested suspect were from the Bangladesh community, off Farm Road, St Joseph. Police are investigating the incident; one man remains in custody.
