LaventilleRideshare Driver Rams Armed Robber, Escapes Planned Ambush

Wharton Branch Road, Laventille, Port of Spain

A 29-year-old rideshare driver operating a white MG vehicle was ambushed on Wharton Branch Road, Laventille on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at approximately 9:15 p.m. after picking up two female passengers from Independence Square, Port of Spain. Police believe the robbery was a planned setup, with one passenger directing the driver to the location where two armed men were waiting. One suspect armed with a firearm announced the robbery and demanded valuables from the driver. Fearing for his life, the driver accelerated his vehicle and struck one of the suspects, knocking him down. As the driver fled the scene, the armed suspect discharged at least one shot from the firearm. The second female passenger exited the vehicle and ran from the area. The driver escaped without injury and reported the incident to police. Officers responded and recovered a 9mm shell casing as evidence; the victim's vehicle was examined by investigators. Police detained one suspect in connection with the incident. The individual remains in custody as investigations continue.
