A masked intruder broke into St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church on George Cabral Street, St. James during the early hours of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, and stole two monstrances—sacred vessels used to display the Blessed Sacrament during Eucharistic Adoration. The suspect was also attempting to steal the church's tabernacle, a highly revered container in which consecrated hosts are reserved, when Parish Priest Father Emmanuel Pierre confronted him inside the church. Startled by the priest's presence and the confrontation, the bandit dropped the tabernacle near the church's entrance and fled the scene before police arrival. Officers from the St. James Police Station responded to the scene and launched an investigation into the burglary; the tabernacle was recovered and secured within the church compound.
