Several plants, including a rare papyrus plant and MacArthur palms, were stolen from the recently restored pond area at Palmiste Park in Palmiste. The papyrus plant was particularly significant due to its historical connection to ancient Egypt, where it was used in paper production, and had been growing for approximately two years. Volunteers and environmental coordinator Zenobia Mohammed reported that the MacArthur palms, also two years old, were among the items taken. Video footage allegedly showing a man and woman removing plants from the park was recently obtained by volunteers, according to Palmiste Historical Society president Terrence Honoré; no arrests have been reported.
