MamoralAK Rifle and Ammunition Seized in Gang Unit Operation

Secluded area, Mamoral No. 1 (vehicle recovered at Chaguanas Police Station), Mamoral, Couva - Tabaquite - Talparo

Officers of the Central Division Gang Unit seized an AK-style rifle with folding metal stock and 19 rounds of 7.62 x 39 mm ammunition during an intelligence-led operation in Mamoral No. 1 on Monday, July 6, 2026. The firearm was concealed behind the driver's seat of a white Kia K2700 that was under surveillance in a secluded area after intelligence indicated a suspect known as 'Shawn' was transporting stolen firearms. Several men, including one matching the suspect's description, fled the scene as officers approached; a woman with access to the vehicle was detained. Kristal Lewis, 30, of Mamoral No. 1, was arrested for possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition and remains in police custody. Investigators are determining whether the seized rifle is linked to the reported theft of weapons from the Municipal Police Station at King's Wharf; the operation was coordinated by senior officers including Deputy Commissioner Suzette Martin and Senior Superintendent Rudolph Bhagwandeen.
